A neat little verse regarding Biblical authority

We discussed “Biblical authority” during our new members’ class at church yesterday. I won’t share the whole discussion, but I found one verse mentioned in particular pretty cool. Matthew 19:3-6,

The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

What’s neat about this is that Jesus is quoting Genesis 2:24. Here it is in context,

And Adam said:
“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”

Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Jesus says that “He who made them at the beginning”, in other words, God, said “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother…” But God isn’t directly speaking in Genesis 2:24, the narrator/writer of Genesis (Moses) is. So Jesus, quoting the writings of Moses, says “God said…”

What a high view of scripture that is.
