Finally, a dream come true! Hey, I at least made the 6th photo.
I’ve started mentoring a high school robotics team. If you’re thinking, “that strange, because you teach college” – that’s true, but my college has an “Early College” program in which high school students do their last two years at college, and graduate with both a high school diploma and an Associate degree. Which is pretty awesome if you ask me.
Specifically, we’re competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition. Here is a short video telling you about it. You will watch it because it is narrated by Morgan Freeman.
The game your robot has to play changes every year. This year’s game is called “rebound rumble”.
I wanted to mention this in case of any of ye readers find yourself in a position where you might be able to organize an activity like this. It’s been a lot of fun, especially for the “kids”. Stressful at times as well – just keeping everyone organized and working together is probably harder than actually building a robot – but I’m glad I’m involved. And you don’t have to be a Physics professor, some of the other teams are mentored by horticulturists, archivists, just about anybody. Check out the organization website if you’re interested.
